This species is endemic to Australia. It is a rare rat to see and was thought to be extinct. They inhabit the rugged north Kimberley region, and are mainly nocturnal mammals. Their population are thought to have declined. There has been very little research carried out about this particular rat since its discovery in 1876 by Peters. Research is currently being conducted on the breeding behaviour of this rat by Canberra University. There is little information available on the distribution and abudance of this rodent. They are known to feed on seeds, fruits from trees, flowers and nectar.
